Chapter 26: Going to Jingshi for Training
Everyone had grown accustomed to such scenes by now, but the looks they cast toward Yu Wanqin were filled with unusual shock and admiration.
Even the renowned Dean Su couldn’t save the patient, yet she had managed to pull it off!
That was a bullet straight to the heart!
How extraordinary must her medical skills be!
If they could recruit such talent to the Military District Hospital, how many soldiers’ lives could be saved!
At this thought, everyone’s eyes grew fervent.
Yu Wanqin was so startled by the commotion that she took half a step back, instinctively looking toward her daughter.
Tongtong, however, remained calm. She puffed out her little chest and stood protectively in front of her mother, her soft voice tinged with pride.
“Uncle Dean, it really was my mom who saved him! My mom is amazing!”
As she spoke, she secretly poked her mother’s back with a tiny finger.
This was the perfect opportunity to secure a job at the hospital!
Receiving her daughter’s hint, Yu Wanqin steadied herself and calmly explained to Dean Su, “I studied some medicine in the past and have a basic understanding of both Chinese and Western pharmacology.”
Dean Su’s face was full of admiration. “You’re being too modest. Such exquisite suturing skills—even the best doctors in our hospital couldn’t achieve that.”
Yu Wanqin felt a bit embarrassed.
She owed it all to her daughter, who had her practice on pigskin every day.
She didn’t dare tell anyone that this was her first time performing surgery and suturing on a real person.
“If I may ask, what method did you use to make the wound heal so quickly?” Dean Su asked excitedly.
Yu Wanqin steeled herself and replied, “I used a secret family remedy.”
“May I ask who your teacher was?”
“Well… I only learned a bit from my father. I never formally apprenticed under anyone.”
Dean Su understood—it seemed she came from a family of medical practitioners.
Yu Wanqin was too embarrassed to admit that her father was just a half-skilled barefoot doctor in their village.
The two of them were lost in their own thoughts.
“May I ask where you are currently employed?”
Yu Wanqin clenched her hands and shook her head. “I don’t have a job.”
Dean Su, however, clapped his hands excitedly, his eyes gleaming. “Comrade Yu! You are truly a hidden medical talent! Would you be interested in working at our Military District Hospital?”
“Coincidentally, the hospital is currently selecting a group of doctors to attend advanced training in Jingshi. Talented individuals like you, with both natural aptitude and a family background in medicine, are exactly what we need! If you’re willing, you can become a full-fledged doctor immediately after completing the training!”
He spoke rapidly, afraid she might refuse.
“Huh? Me? Go to Jingshi?” Yu Wanqin was stunned and instinctively waved her hands. “No, no! Dean, I… I never studied systematically. I just picked things up on my own, a self-taught amateur…”
The other doctors: “…”
If such incredible medical skills were considered amateur, they might as well bury themselves in shame!
Ugh… comparing oneself to others really is disheartening.
Dean Su, however, laughed heartily. “Comrade Yu, you’re too modest. It’s settled then. I’ll personally arrange everything for you. Once I’ve made the arrangements, you can set off with the other doctors from our hospital!”
With a decisive wave of his hand, he finalized the matter, then hurried off with a group of doctors and nurses, not even sparing a glance at Gu Yanbin, as if afraid Yu Wanqin might change her mind.
The Military Officer at the door hesitated and chased after him. “Dean Su, should we conduct another examination of Commander Gu’s injury?”
Dean Su rolled his eyes. “What’s there to examine? He looks perfectly fine to me. He can be discharged tomorrow!”
Don’t delay him from finding good seedlings!
After saying that, he even quickly glanced back at Yu Wanqin several times, as if afraid she would run away.
The Military Officer awkwardly rubbed his nose and didn’t say anything more.
Dean Su arranged for someone to transfer Gu Yanbin to a regular ward.
The Military Officers all expressed their concern and didn’t leave until they confirmed Gu Yanbin was truly out of danger, gradually filing out one after another.
The ward finally returned to quiet.
Only the three little ones and Yu Wanqin remained.
Gu Yanbin leaned against the raised head of the bed, his gaze complex as it fell on Yu Wanqin.
“Thank you… you saved me again.”
His voice was low, hoarse from the ordeal, so soft it was almost inaudible.
Yu Wanqin was still somewhat dazed; hearing this, she snapped back to reality, bewildered.
“Commander Gu, what did you say?”
Even now, she couldn’t quite believe she had really saved him.
It felt like a dream.
Although Tongtong had helped, the surgery and suturing were all done by her own hands.
It all relied on the hard work she had put in before.
Meeting her clear, bright eyes, Gu Yanbin swallowed his words.
“…It’s nothing, thank you for saving me.”
But Tongtong had heard clearly.
Her little ears were sharp!
Her big, dark eyes rolled around, and she placed her chubby little hand under her chin, stroking it thoughtfully.
Thinking.
Why did Godfather say “again”?
There must be something she didn’t know about!
Yu Wanqin didn’t think too much about it, a gentle smile appearing on her face. “You’re too kind. Tongtong and I have to thank you for taking care of us these past days.”
Gu Yanbin stared at her for a while before somewhat dejectedly looking away.
She really didn’t remember.
Gu Jingnan and Si Muchen, now relieved, silently kept them company.
The children were all tired, so Gu Yanbin suggested, “I’ll have to trouble you to take the children back to rest first.”
Xiao Zhou immediately patted his chest, assuring, “I’ll definitely take good care of our Commander Gu.”
Yu Wanqin chuckled. “Alright, then Commander Gu, you rest well. I’ll make some soup and bring it over tomorrow. Having some nourishing food will help you recover faster.”
“Okay.”
…
The next day, Yu Wanqin indeed brought over some chicken soup she had stewed.
Simmered over low heat for two hours, golden oil droplets floated on the clear surface of the soup, the aroma of chicken wafting from the insulated container.
Lying in the hospital bed, Gu Yanbin’s nose twitched, feeling a bit eager.
…It smells delicious!
He originally thought he was fine and wanted to be discharged directly, but the Chief wouldn’t allow it.
A serious injury takes a hundred days to heal, let alone a bullet near the heart. He had to stay in the hospital for observation for at least a week.
He had thought staying in the hospital would be dull and boring, but he hadn’t expected such an unexpected perk.
This hospital stay was definitely worth it!
Gu Yanbin’s smile nearly reached his ears.
“Godfather!” Tongtong, like a slippery little fish, broke free from her mother’s grasp.
She toddled over to the hospital bed on her short little legs and nimbly climbed onto the chair beside it.
Her short legs dangling in the air, she cupped her little face in her hands, her big eyes blinking like they held stars.
“Does it still hurt?”
Then she pouted her little mouth, pretending to blow on it for him, her voice milky and soft. “Mommy says blowing on it makes it stop hurting.”
Looking at the adorable, snow-like little face full of concern before him, Gu Yanbin’s heart melted completely.
Those complicated feelings were also washed away quite a bit.
He ruffled Tongtong’s fluffy little head with his big hand. “After Tongtong blows on it, Godfather doesn’t hurt anymore.”
Tongtong grinned, revealing a row of tiny millet-like teeth, his eyes crinkling into crescents.
After speaking, he seemed to remember something.
He rummaged through the bedside cabinet next to his hospital bed and pulled out an item, presenting it to Tongtong as if offering a treasure.
His voice softened unconsciously: “This is a gift I brought back for you when I went on a mission to Haishi.”
Tongtong’s eyes lit up.
Wow! A gift!
