Chapter 53: The Talent Coveted by All Hospitals in Jingshi
Regiment Commander Yang’s expression stiffened as he stepped forward to explain, “Army Commander, it’s just children being immature…”
“Shut up!” Liu Zhenjun glared at him, then turned his gaze to the fuming Gu Jingnan, gesturing with his chin. “Kid, you tell me!”
Gu Jingnan finally found an outlet to vent, and like beans pouring out of a bamboo tube, he rattled off everything that had just happened.
The more Liu Zhenjun listened, the colder his expression grew, and the air in the ward seemed to freeze.
His eyes sharp as lightning, he glared angrily at Shen Wei. “It’s you again, you ill-intentioned comrade! Last time, you tried to push a child into the water and twisted the truth. What now? Has the investigation into your nursing qualification exam fraud been resolved? Who allowed you to leave the confinement room without permission?”
Lin Zhiguo was stunned and immediately turned to look at Shen Wei.
Shen Wei’s face paled with fear, her body trembling like a leaf in the wind. She stammered, “Chief, I… I didn’t.”
But her words sounded anything but convincing.
Dean Su, hearing this, finally understood the situation completely.
As this involved the hospital’s personnel matters, he took it very seriously. His expression turned cold, and he no longer showed Shen Wei any courtesy.
“Comrade Shen Wei, please return immediately to cooperate with the investigation! The hospital will handle your issue seriously and will not tolerate any leniency!”
Lin Zhiguo, however, spoke up anxiously, “Dean Su, there must be some misunderstanding here. That child Lin Tongtong has always been unruly. She must be behind this, spreading lies and falsely accusing others!”
He believed that Dean Su valued him for his future prospects and, by extension, valued Shen Wei.
He thought that if he spoke up, Dean Su would at least give him some face.
But after noticing his attitude toward Tongtong, Dean Su had lost all patience with him.
He couldn’t be bothered to respond and directly called the hospital’s security personnel to take Shen Wei away.
Shen Wei was terrified. In her panic, she turned to Regiment Commander Yang, pleading urgently, “Regiment Commander Yang, I’ve been wronged. Please say something for me, Regiment Commander Yang!”
Regiment Commander Yang’s face alternated between green and pale. He glared at her fiercely and, gritting his teeth under pressure, said, “If you’re truly innocent, you have nothing to fear from an investigation. Comrade Shen Wei, The Organization will surely give you a fair resolution.”
Shen Wei thought he had agreed to help her and finally breathed a sigh of relief, following the security personnel away.
Regiment Commander Yang, however, let out a long sigh of relief, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and stole a glance at Liu Zhenjun.
Seeing that Liu Zhenjun couldn’t be bothered to look at him, he finally relaxed, quickly found an excuse, and left.
The others also looked embarrassed and gradually dispersed.
Lin Zhiguo lay in bed, his body aching terribly, his mind a tangled mess, utterly bewildered.
This scene… wasn’t at all what he had expected!
Hadn’t he performed meritoriously and was about to be promoted to officer? Why were the chiefs and Dean Su treating him this way?
Never mind why Shen Wei was being investigated.
In his current state, he couldn’t be left alone.
He looked at Tongtong, who was being held in Liu Zhenjun’s arms, suppressed his anger, and spoke in a gentle tone, “Tongtong, look, Dad is badly injured and has no one to take care of him. Why don’t you stay and look after Dad for a few days…”
He thought that since he was in such a pitiful state, his daughter would surely stay to fulfill her filial duties.
Once their relationship improved, he might even have a chance to inquire about the Army Commander.
Liu Zhenjun was directly angered into a bitter laugh by his words. Holding the child, he retorted without any courtesy, “Lin Zhiguo, as a grown man, have you no shame?”
“Expecting a three-and-a-half-year-old toddler to take care of you—Tongtong can’t even take care of herself. As a father, instead of protecting the young, you want to exploit your own daughter. You’re worse than an animal! Once you recover, I’ll have the political department thoroughly re-educate you!”
After saying this, he carried Tongtong and left without even sparing Lin Zhiguo a glance.
Dean Su snorted coldly and also turned away in displeasure.
As Si Muchen left, he gave him a deep look before hurrying after Tongtong.
Lin Zhiguo, being scolded, felt both shocked and furious, and his wound seemed to ache even more.
Especially the Army Commander’s icy gaze as he left filled him with panic.
If things continued like this, forget about promotion to officer—he feared it wouldn’t be long before he’d have to pack up and be discharged home!
No! Absolutely not!
Before he could think of a solution, hospital security personnel entered. Unlike their previous gentle demeanor, they now spoke in a cold, official tone: “Deputy Battalion Commander Lin, based on your recovery progress, there’s no need for you to occupy the special ward any longer. We are now transferring you to a general ward.”
Lin Zhiguo was stunned, dumbfounded.
What was the meaning of this?!
But these people gave him no chance to argue, swiftly moving him from the private room to a six-person ward.
All previous special medications, nutritional meals, and other privileges were canceled.
His treatment had plummeted drastically.
Lin Zhiguo was so angry that his wound and liver ached. He fumed for most of the night, but no one brought him food or even a glass of water.
When he got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, he nearly fell in the toilet, pulling at his wound and tearing open the freshly stitched injury.
Too scared to move, he quickly pressed the call button for a nurse, hoping Dean Su would come examine him.
But after waiting and waiting, Dean Su never arrived.
A young doctor on duty came over, gave a cursory check, said it was normal, re-bandaged the wound, and prepared to leave.
Unable to hold back, Lin Zhiguo grabbed him and asked, “Where’s Dean Su? Shouldn’t he be in charge of my condition?”
The young doctor paused, frowning. “Dean Su usually only treats Chiefs or critically injured patients. He’s very busy and has no time.”
With that, he left directly.
Lin Zhiguo withdrew his hand in a daze, feeling a vast emptiness inside.
Hadn’t Dean Su given him preferential treatment because he was about to be promoted?
Shen Wei was already under investigation, and judging by Dean Su’s attitude toward her, it didn’t seem like he valued her much either…
Filled with confusion, he endured the pain and forced himself to stay awake until dawn.
In the morning, two young nurses came to change his dressing, chatting idly together.
“Hey, didn’t your boyfriend go to Jingshi Medical University for training? Counting the days, he should be back soon, right?”
“Exactly! It’s been almost two months since I last saw him. Once he returns, we’re getting engaged.”
Hearing “Jingshi Medical University,” Lin Zhiguo couldn’t help but perk up his ears.
The two nurses didn’t notice and continued in lowered voices.
“Hey, let me tell you—I heard that among this batch of doctors sent for training, there’s an exceptionally talented prospect. Jingshi Medical University even wanted to recruit them, but our dean absolutely refused to agree!”
“Who’s that impressive, to catch the eye of talent-rich Jingshi?”
“Seems like it’s a female doctor…”
Lin Zhiguo heard this and inexplicably thought of Yu Wanqin.
Yet he found it absurd.
Yu Wanqin was just a country woman who only knew how to keep her head down and work, illiterate and uneducated—how could it possibly be her?
Her chance to go to Jingshi for training was probably because she had picked up a bit from her half-baked barefoot doctor father, a case of a blind cat stumbling upon a dead mouse.
But… if it wasn’t her, why would Dean Su treat Tongtong so well, even turning against him for Tongtong’s sake?
His mind was a mess. Unable to hold back, he asked the two nurses in a hoarse voice, “Excuse me, that female doctor you mentioned earlier… what’s her name?”
The two nurses were taken aback, exchanged a glance, and shook their heads. “Not too sure, seems like her surname might be Yu?”
