Chapter 69: Supercharged Misfortune Transfer
Xinxin stubbornly shook his head, speaking softly yet clearly: “Want… to sleep… with sister…”
He Xiulan was in a dilemma.
She was afraid Xinxin would disturb them at night—Wanqin still had to work tomorrow.
“Xinxin…”
Xinxin stubbornly covered his ears, his eyes glistening with moisture.
He didn’t say another word, looking utterly pitiful.
Yu Wanqin looked at the two children, her heart softening. She smiled and said to He Xiulan, “Godmother, it’s fine. Let Xinxin sleep here. I’ll take both children to sleep in the guest room with me. The bed is big enough.”
He Xiulan still hesitated: “But… won’t they be too noisy for you?”
“They won’t. Both children are well-behaved,” Yu Wanqin said gently, stroking Xinxin’s hair.
So, after washing up for the night, Yu Wanqin lay down on the guest room bed with two sweet-smelling little ones.
Tongtong and Xinxin snuggled up to her on either side, both with bright, wide-awake eyes.
“Mommy, story!” Tongtong made her nightly routine request.
Yu Wanqin smiled and picked up a book she often read to her daughter. It wasn’t a fairy tale, but a simplified picture-book version of Zizhi Tongjian.
Tongtong had somehow dug it out from somewhere earlier and insisted she read it.
Their bedtime reading had now evolved from medical texts to all sorts of books.
Yu Wanqin simply thought her daughter wanted to be close to her.
It never crossed her mind that Tongtong was subtly cultivating her.
Just as she opened the book, He Xiulan entered carrying two cups of warm milk: “Here, children, drink your milk to sleep well.”
As she drew closer, she heard Yu Wanqin reading in a gentle voice: “…Thus, Zhao Kuo, who only theorized about warfare on paper, replaced Lian Po and led the Zhao army to attack the Qin forces…”
He Xiulan paused, thinking she had misheard.
She set down the milk and leaned over to look—Yu Wanqin was indeed holding a history book.
Tongtong and Xinxin stared with big eyes, listening quite attentively.
“Wanqin…” He Xiulan couldn’t help but ask in surprise, “Why are you reading this to the children? Can they understand? Don’t people usually tell stories about kittens and puppies, princes and princesses?”
Their Xinxin’s little room was filled with such fairy tale books, which Liu Zhenjun had managed to acquire from abroad.
Yu Wanqin smiled somewhat sheepishly, not yet sure how to explain.
Tongtong eagerly answered first, her little voice soft and sweet: “Grandma, Mommy says ‘reading history makes one wise’! What Mommy reads is much more interesting than fairy tales! You can learn lots of lessons!”
He Xiulan was quite astonished.
She admired and respected Yu Wanqin even more.
Her dry daughter was truly extraordinary.
No wonder she could raise such a bright and intelligent daughter like Tongtong!
Unassuming and steady, knowing to nurture children with historical allusions—just this vision and perspective far surpassed most women in the family compound!
“Your mommy is right. Then you must learn well from her.”
He Xiulan affectionately patted the children’s little heads and said cheerfully to Yu Wanqin, “Wanqin, you really know how to teach children! I almost wish I could hand Xinxin over to you to raise too!”
Yu Wanqin smiled: “I’d be willing, but I’m afraid you wouldn’t part with him, Godmother.”
This made the old lady laugh heartily, nodding as she chuckled: “Nonsense, I’d be delighted!”
She beamed and said, “Well, you carry on with your reading. Grandma won’t disturb you. Remember to drink your milk.”
This milk was also specially ordered by Liu Zhenjun from the canteen, and they deliver it fresh every day.
Today, the Old Lady asked for two extra servings.
She gently closed the door.
Inside the room, Yu Wanqin continued softly recounting the story of the Battle of Changping.
Tongtong listened with great interest, occasionally chiming in with questions.
Although Xinxin remained quiet, he also listened with wide eyes, occasionally grabbing the hem of Yu Wanqin’s clothes when the story grew tense.
The woman’s gentle and steady voice drifted through the crack in the door.
He Xiulan sighed once more.
What a wonderful girl, it’s such a pity she ended up with a scoundrel like Lin Zhiguo and his family.
She needed to protect this mother and daughter pair even more carefully!
The night grew deeper.
Tongtong waited until her mother and Brother Xinxin were sound asleep before quietly climbing out of bed.
The shadows of the trees outside the window swayed gently.
She activated her special ability in her small palm.
A branch automatically extended to the window.
Tongtong nimbly climbed from the window onto the branch, which then steadily lowered her to the ground.
“Thank you, little tree!”
Tongtong waved her hand and ran off into the distance.
The direction she headed was precisely toward the guesthouse outside the Military District.
In the quiet of the deep night, at the family compound guesthouse.
The old Lin family members, having caused trouble all day, were already snoring loudly.
Lin Zhiguo found them noisy and feared gossip, so he paid out of his own pocket to book them the cheapest dormitory-style room, while he returned to his own quarters.
Si Muchen’s small figure slipped silently near the guesthouse, hiding in the shadows.
Just in time, he saw Lin Laosan cursing and shuffling out of the guesthouse in his slippers, walking to the base of the wall, dropping his pants, and preparing to relieve himself.
Si Muchen’s eyes were dark and gloomy, gleaming with a dangerous, cold light.
[System! Misfortune transfer! Supercharged!]
You vile thing, trying to harm Tongtong and Aunt Yu—he would make sure he could never harm anyone again for the rest of his life!
The light sphere in his mind immediately grew excited.
[Ding! Host’s command received!]
[Consuming 50 Energy value! Misfortune transfer supercharged! Go!]
Just as Lin Laosan was halfway through relieving himself, he suddenly heard the sound of vicious dogs barking wildly behind him!
He turned around abruptly, and the sight before him was one he would never forget for the rest of his life—it scared the soul right out of him!
Three or four large wolfhounds, appearing out of nowhere with glowing green eyes, were baring their teeth and charging straight at him!
“Oh my god!”
Lin Laosan screamed in terror, not even bothering to pull up his pants, and turned to run!
But how could he outrun wolfhounds?
He hadn’t run more than a few steps before they caught up with him. His pants were torn to shreds, his buttocks were bitten bloody, and the pain made him cry out for his parents as he fled blindly in panic!
Misfortune followed him relentlessly along the way.
He was either bitten by the dogs, fell into a mud pit, stepped on nails, or tumbled onto broken glass… He even crashed into a tree and knocked out four teeth.
It was as if he had experienced every bit of bad luck in his entire life.
[Left! There’s a freshly dug tree pit on the left!] the System provided real-time navigation.
The wolfhounds seemed to receive some kind of signal, howling as they herded Lin Laosan step by step toward the pit.
Sure enough, Lin Laosan ran straight to the edge of the pit and stepped into empty air.
“Splash—”
“Ah!”
He fell face-first into a three-meter-deep tree pit in an utterly humiliating posture.
Even worse, someone had placed several sharp bamboo stakes at the bottom of the pit, which stabbed straight into his crotch.
“Aaaah!!!”
Another piercing scream tore through the night sky.
Lin Laosan felt an indescribable, sharp pain surge through his lower body, blood staining the last remaining piece of his underwear.
The agony overwhelmed him, darkness clouding his vision as he passed out.
He lay collapsed in the pit like a dead dog.
