Chapter 72: Lin Laosan Harmed a Young Woman
The tree shadows swayed gently.
In Tongtong’s mind, Grandpa Tree’s voice echoed.
【It seems he harmed some young woman, and the matter blew up. It was only barely suppressed thanks to your father’s status as a military officer. That family couldn’t report it to the police, but they declared they’d beat him to death if they ever saw him again.】
Tongtong clenched her little fists.
Her small face puffed up with anger.
He’s really too wicked! Too shameless!
The whole family is no good!
“Who was the person he harmed?”
【From what I heard them say, it was a girl from the same village. I think… her surname was Zhang or something…】
Tongtong fell into thought.
She thanked Grandpa Tree and then returned to her uncle’s house. He Xiulan was already up, preparing breakfast in the kitchen.
Seeing her come in from outside, He Xiulan was startled. “Oh, my little darling, where did you run off to so early?”
Tongtong immediately put on a sweet smile, rushed over, and hugged her leg. “Tongtong couldn’t sleep, so I went to the bathroom! Good morning, Grandma!”
He Xiulan’s heart melted. She lovingly patted Tongtong’s little head. “Good morning, Tongtong. Grandma made egg pancakes. Go wash up and eat!”
Tongtong agreed softly and obediently went to wash up.
Soon, Yu Wanqin and Xinxin also got up.
On the breakfast table were millet congee, boiled eggs, pickled vegetables, and the egg pancakes He Xiulan had made herself—simple yet warm.
When Xinxin saw Tongtong, his eyes visibly brightened. Silently, he placed a peeled egg on the plate in front of her.
Tongtong gave him a sweet smile. “Thank you, Brother Xinxin!”
“…You’re welcome,” Xinxin replied earnestly.
He Xiulan watched the two children, grinning from ear to ear.
Ever since Tongtong arrived, Xinxin had been smiling more and more, and he could communicate normally, almost no different from any other child now.
Yu Wanqin also felt that the gloom of the past few days had been somewhat dispelled by the warm morning light.
After breakfast, Tongtong pattered over to her mother, blinking her big eyes and pleading softly, “Mom, it’s Sunday today. Tongtong doesn’t have school. Can I go to work with you?”
Yu Wanqin hesitated. After all, the hospital was a workplace, and bringing a child along might not leave a good impression.
Tongtong said obediently, “Tongtong promises to be good! I won’t make noise or cause trouble! I won’t disturb Mom!”
He Xiulan chimed in from the side, “Take her along to see. Tongtong is so well-behaved; she won’t cause any trouble. Let her see where you work too.”
Yu Wanqin looked into her daughter’s bright, eager eyes and softened. She nodded. “Alright, but Tongtong must listen and not run around.”
“Yay! Mom is the best!” Tongtong happily snuggled into her mother’s arms, her big, dark eyes darting around.
Going to the hospital today was sure to be interesting.
She also had to protect Mom from being bullied by those bad Grandpa and Grandma!
There wasn’t much going on at the hospital that day. Yu Wanqin didn’t have any surgeries scheduled and only saw a few outpatients.
Tongtong sat obediently in the office doing her homework, earning praise from many of the nurses and aunties.
With her sweet mouth and pretty looks, calling everyone “sister” or “auntie,” she charmed them all.
Just as Yu Wanqin finished seeing a patient, a nurse rushed over, looking anxious. “Doctor Yu! Emergency just brought in a critically injured patient with an open abdominal wound, intestines exposed, and massive bleeding. They’re already in shock! The director specifically asked for you to come immediately to prepare for surgery!”
Yu Wanqin’s expression changed. She hurriedly instructed Tongtong and followed the nurse out.
Just as she reached the main hall, she heard a commotion that sounded like ghosts wailing and wolves howling.
“Doctor! Save us! Save my son!”
Such a familiar voice.
Yu Wanqin couldn’t help but take a closer look and realized it was actually someone she knew.
In the office, Tongtong’s eyes lit up as well. She slid off her chair and pattered to the doorway to watch the commotion.
The hospital’s main hall was packed with layers of onlookers.
There sat Old Mr. Lin and Old Mrs. Lin, along with a gloomy-faced Lin Zhiguo, carrying a makeshift stretcher made from a door plank, wailing and crying in the middle of the hall.
Lying on the stretcher was Lin Youcai, his lower body covered in blood, eyes closed, his condition unknown.
The on-duty doctor and nurses rushed over to examine him. When they lifted the tattered cloth covering Lin Youcai’s lower body, everyone gasped in shock!
The injury… was simply horrific, as if it had been gnawed by some wild beast, a bloody, mangled mess!
His manhood was likely beyond saving.
“How… how did this happen?” the doctor asked in astonishment.
“He was bitten by a wild dog! He fell into a pit!” Old Mr. Lin wailed, his words vague and unclear.
“Doctor, please hurry and check on my brother. Can you save… that thing?” Lin Zhiguo spoke up, his face dark and grim.
Old Mrs. Lin was on the verge of fainting from crying.
Then, she spotted Yu Wanqin, who had just changed into her white coat and walked out.
In that instant, it was as if she had seen a lifeline. She lunged forward, grabbing Yu Wanqin’s arm tightly.
“Wanqin! Wanqin, hurry! Go find your hospital director! Ask him to perform the surgery on your brother himself! I heard he’s the best doctor in the whole hospital! Go call him now!”
Old Mrs. Lin’s voice was shrill, her nails digging almost into flesh.
Yu Wanqin shook off her hand and said coldly, “The director is currently in another surgery. The hospital has its procedures. They will assign another doctor to you…”
“No! It has to be the director!” Old Mrs. Lin threw a tantrum, her voice rising even higher. “Aren’t you capable now? So familiar with the director! Won’t you even help with this? Is this how a daughter-in-law behaves? Leaving someone to die! Everyone, come and see!”
She clung tightly to Yu Wanqin’s hand, sitting on the ground and rolling around, forcing her to go fetch the director.
The commotion drew even more onlookers.
Just then, a young female doctor with immaculate makeup walked over. She lifted her chin slightly, sweeping an impatient glance over the chaotic scene. Her gaze lingered on Yu Wanqin for a moment, filled with undisguised disdain.
“What’s all this noise? Is this a hospital or a marketplace?”
Zhang Yanfang, who had been hiding in the crowd watching the spectacle, brightened up and immediately put on a fawning expression. “Doctor Shen, you’re back from your vacation in Jingshi?”
Shen Xinyun gave her a haughty, cold glance before nodding faintly. She then gestured with her chin toward the scene. “What’s going on here?”
Zhang Yanfang recounted the story with added drama.
She particularly emphasized the gossip about the Lin family.
Shen Xinyun curled her lips coldly, her eyes filled with contempt and disdain.
These people from small towns were truly annoying.
Over there, Old Mrs. Lin was still clinging to Yu Wanqin, refusing to let go.
A nearby nurse was growing frantic. “Madam! We have a critically ill patient over there! Doctor Yu must go immediately!”
“No!” Old Mrs. Lin, acting as if she had gone mad, tightened her grip and screamed unreasonably, “What patient could be more important than my son’s life? You must go get the director for me right now! Otherwise, I won’t let go!”
Seeing that the rescue was about to be delayed, Yu Wanqin also grew angry.
Her tone icy, she said, “Let go!”
Shen Xinyun raised her chin arrogantly and said to the nurse, “Where is the patient? Take me there. I’ve handled many emergency surgeries like this back in the capital.”
She didn’t take Yu Wanqin, a doctor from the countryside, seriously at all.
