Chapter 98: Turning Lin Zhiguo
Lin Zhiguo’s head was throbbing from the noise. He left the person behind and walked away first.
He still needed to raise money.
With pent-up frustration and nowhere to vent, after much thought, Lin Zhiguo went to find Regiment Commander Yang.
Yang Dawei, Regiment Commander Yang, had just stepped out of his house. He was still suspended and under investigation, unable to leave the Military District or return to his office to work.
He appeared somewhat agitated.
Seeing Lin Zhiguo arrive, his eyes flickered. After glancing around to ensure no one was nearby, he led Lin Zhiguo to a secluded corner.
“Regiment Commander Yang! Today is the day to pay the compensation. Where’s the money you promised me?” Lin Zhiguo got straight to the point, his words gritted through clenched teeth.
Yang Dawei pursed his lips, a shadow passing through his eyes. “Zhi Guo, you know my family’s situation… I married into the Zhu family back then and have no savings of my own. I really can’t come up with that much money.”
“Besides, I’ve been suspended because of you people. I can’t get my hands on any money for the time being!”
Lin Zhiguo panicked.
He couldn’t come up with it? Then what was he supposed to do!
“Regiment Commander Yang! You… you promised earlier, and besides… Shen Wei is pregnant. I don’t have a single cent right now. You can’t just stand by and watch the child suffer in the countryside, can you?”
Yang Dawei patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you figure something out…”
He paused here, cautiously glancing around again to confirm no one was nearby.
Then, leaning closer to Lin Zhiguo, he lowered his voice. “I do have a way, but I don’t know if you dare to do it!”
Lin Zhiguo was already in a desperate situation. He didn’t care what the method was.
As long as it could solve his immediate predicament, he would do it!
Without hesitation, he nodded. “Tell me!”
Yang Dawei was somewhat satisfied with his reaction and grinned. “It’s not difficult. In a couple of days, the Military District research institute of the Second Regiment will be transporting a batch of equipment to Jingshi. You’ll be in charge of this mission. Help me find out exactly what’s inside, and…”
Here, his voice dropped even lower. “If necessary, eliminate the engineer inside!”
Lin Zhiguo was horrified. His face turned as pale as paper, his body swayed, and he stared at the other man in disbelief.
Staring into Yang Dawei’s sinister eyes, he felt a chill run through his entire body.
“Wh… why?” he stammered, his lips trembling.
Yang Dawei simply stared at him in silence.
The gaze made Lin Zhiguo’s heart turn cold.
Now, everything became clear.
No wonder so many key members of the Second Regiment had died in missions over the years. The higher-ups had been investigating the mole but had never suspected Yang Dawei.
He bitterly regretted his decision!
If only he hadn’t come to find Regiment Commander Yang!
Yang Dawei sneered and patted his shoulder again. “Lin Zhiguo, you’re a smart man. I don’t need to say more. You should understand.”
“To be honest, our people have had their eyes on you for a long time. Otherwise, how do you think you got your brother’s credit back then? And how did you manage to hide it from so many people?”
Watching Lin Zhiguo’s rapidly changing expression, Yang Dawei sneered inwardly.
If Lin Zhiguo’s brother hadn’t discovered his identity back then, he wouldn’t have died on that mission.
And that was all thanks to that foolish woman, Shen Wei, who provided him with the information.
Lin Zhiguo’s face alternated between green and pale.
His emotions were extremely complicated.
“You need to think this through clearly… As long as this matter is accomplished, The Organization will reward you handsomely. Not only that, but I have connections higher up who can guarantee your promotion and advancement.” Yang Dawei patted his shoulder and then leisurely walked away.
Only Lin Zhiguo remained, standing there utterly dejected.
His hands and feet felt icy cold.
After a long while, he wiped his face, his complexion deathly pale, and began walking back step by step.
As he emerged from the small grove, his gaze suddenly turned back to look.
But there was nothing there.
She knew very well that she was being watched.
If Yang Dawei dared to entrust him with such an important task, he would certainly have backup plans in place.
If he dared to report this, someone would shoot him dead the very next moment.
Lin Zhiguo’s mind was in turmoil, his thoughts constantly flashing back to Yang Dawei’s words, and… the promise of promotion and advancement.
The temptation was simply too great!
“Hey! Deputy Company Commander Lin! Why aren’t you watching where you’re going?”
A woman bumped into him head-on, looking at him reproachfully.
Lin Zhiguo was somewhat absent-minded and mumbled an apology. Without even glancing at the other person, he hurried away.
Li Xue pursed her lips, rubbing her sore shoulder, her heart filled with grievances. She spat out, “In such a hurry! Rushing off to be reborn, are you?”
She snorted, holding her shoulder as she walked away.
But she didn’t notice Si Muchen standing in the corner, thoughtfully watching the direction Lin Zhiguo had left.
In the afternoon, Lin Zhiguo went to see Yang Dawei again. The two of them talked behind closed doors for a long time, and it wasn’t until Zhu Xiuxiu returned that Lin Zhiguo finally left.
Zhu Xiuxiu didn’t pay much attention. She took out the bankbook and approached Yang Dawei, asking, “Dawei, why is so much money missing? Did you withdraw it?”
Yang Dawei’s heart skipped a beat, but he feigned calm on the surface, smoothly pulling out the excuse he had prepared long ago.
“…Oh, I got a letter from back home. Both my parents fell ill at the same time and needed money urgently for the hospital, so I sent it back right away. It was an emergency, so I didn’t have time to tell you.”
Although Zhu Xiuxiu was sharp-tongued, she usually didn’t pry too much into her husband’s family affairs, as Yang Dawei had often taken money home for various reasons every now and then.
She just grumbled unhappily, “Your hometown again! Your parents sure get sick often. Our home is practically becoming your family’s ATM!”
Hearing this, Yang Dawei felt a pang of guilt, and cold sweat nearly broke out on his forehead.
Fearing that Zhu Xiuxiu might dig deeper, he quickly stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, speaking in an unusually gentle and ingratiating tone, “Xiuxiu, don’t be angry. My parents raised me with great difficulty, and now that they’re sick, how can I ignore them?”
As he spoke, he carefully observed Zhu Xiuxiu’s expression, trying to divert her attention.
“Besides, we need to think about our own future too. I’ve always thought, how wonderful would it be if we could have a child of our own, preferably a chubby little boy? Wouldn’t that make our family truly complete?”
Zhu Xiuxiu’s heart softened at his rare gentleness and the mention of “having a son,” and her attitude softened considerably.
But she couldn’t help asking, “What’s going on between you and Shen Wei? You two seem quite familiar.”
Yang Dawei’s eyes flickered, “What are you talking about? Isn’t it because you’re close to her that you asked me to look after her and her husband more?”
Zhu Xiuxiu looked suspicious, “Is that really it?”
“What else could it be? Oh… let’s not talk about other people’s business. We have more important things to focus on now. You still have to give me a son!”
Yang Dawei deftly changed the subject, pulling Zhu Xiuxiu into his arms and taking advantage of the moment. After a bout of intimacy, Zhu Xiuxiu forgot to ask about the money again.
Afterward, Yang Dawei eagerly went to pour a glass of water, then took out a small, exquisite bottle from his pocket.
He casually poured out a white pill and handed it to Zhu Xiuxiu. “Xiuxiu, take this vitamin. It’s a high-end product I had someone bring back from abroad, specially designed for women to nourish their bodies. It’s good for preparing for pregnancy.”
It was even imported from Japan.
In the past, Zhu Xiuxiu would have swallowed it without hesitation, even touched by her husband’s thoughtfulness.
But now, as she looked at the small white pill, she inexplicably recalled Tongtong’s words.
She had taken medicine recklessly and ruined her health.
