Chapter 52: Heaven Wants to Destroy Her
Lan Mo finished her bath and returned to the space to begin her work. She hadn’t yet had time to harvest the apples in the field. The avatar of “Little Useless in the Cultivation World” kept flashing on the screen.
【Little Pitiful in the Sixties, are you there?】
【I’m here.】
【Do you still have any of that beef jerky you made? I can trade something for it.】
She hadn’t even opened the jar of beef sauce stored in the space yet. These past two days, she had been busy making braised beef and curing beef.
【I still have one jar left. Do you want it? Aren’t you in the Cultivation World? I heard cultivators generally don’t eat mortal food.】
【Yes, yes, yes! You’re right. Mortal food lacks Spiritual Energy. Eating it produces a lot of impurities in the body, which can easily clog the meridians and is extremely detrimental to cultivation.】
【Then why do you still want to eat it?】
【Mainly because you made the beef sauce so delicious. Even though my body doesn’t need it, my mouth craves it. It’s fine—I can take some Foundation Establishment Pills to remove the impurities from my body. How about giving me some of those spice seeds? I’ll plant them in my spirit field.】
【Do you know how to make beef sauce yourself?】
【No, I only know alchemy, medicine-making, and crafting Talismans.】
She doesn’t know how? Then why plant those spices? Never mind, just let her plant them. If she can’t cook, won’t those Spiritual Energy-infused spices end up benefiting me instead?
【Alright, I’ll send you the spice seeds once I’ve collected them. For now, I’ll send you this last jar of beef sauce.】
【Are you really down to your last jar of beef sauce?】
【Yes, I don’t have any fresh beef left here, so I can’t make more beef sauce.】
【How about I catch a Yellow Spirit Ox for you tomorrow? Gale Rabbits and Seven-Colored Brocade Chickens are also delicious. Do you know how to prepare them?】
【No, no, no! Please don’t mess with me! I’m just a mere mortal with no special skills and not even a weapon to defend myself. Even an ant from your Cultivation World could kill me.】
【Don’t worry, I’ll clean and prepare them first before sending them to you. Just make them into something tasty and give me half. These Low-grade Spirit Beasts contain Spiritual Energy, you know. Mortals who eat them can strengthen their bodies and prolong their lives.】
Well, she was quite interested in things infused with Spiritual Energy. This “Little Useless in the Cultivation World” was a golden thigh to cling to. Not only could she help Lan Mo get rich, but at the very least, she wouldn’t have to worry about her health.
【Alright then, I’ll send you the last jar of beef sauce first.】
This “Little Pitiful in the Sixties” was quite easy to talk to—she even sent her the last jar. She should show her appreciation properly in return.
【Little Pitiful in the Sixties, I heard you’re a doctor? As a token of thanks, I’ll also send you some top-grade Hemostatic Powder and Purple Jade Bone-Mending Ointment.】
This “Little Useless in the Cultivation World” was truly a person of character. Lan Mo felt as if she were walking on clouds, light and buoyant!
【Okay, thank you!】
Lan Mo sent over the last jar of beef sauce from her space, and soon, a pile of medicine bottles arrived from the other side.
Lan Mo glanced at the labels on the bottles and opened one of Hemostatic Powder and one of Bone-Mending Ointment.
She never expected that the Hemostatic Powder sent by “Little Useless in the Cultivation World” wasn’t white but actually pink. Even the Purple Jade Bone-Mending Ointment wasn’t purple but a grassy green.
This truly overturned her understanding of the world. Products from the Cultivation World were indeed exceptional—this medicine was truly unique.
Lan Mo took advantage of her free time to quickly harvest the apples from the field. With apples being collected every day, the warehouse was already overflowing with them. Today, she decided to plant pears instead, since she could now grow them anyway.
Since she couldn’t sleep, Lan Mo decided to browse around and see which of her friends had a little paw icon lit up next to their profile picture. After all, it would be foolish not to take advantage of such opportunities.
Unfortunately, her farm was only at level eleven, and she still couldn’t unlock the ranch.
Otherwise, she would have loved to raise dozens of chickens for meat and eggs, keep a few goats for roasted whole lamb, and raise a couple of cows so she could drink fresh milk every day. Any extra milk could even be used for a milk bath.
Spicy dry pot rabbit was delicious, so she could raise a few hutches of rabbits too. Ducks and geese could be braised, so she’d keep a few of each as well…
Ah…! When would her farm ever reach level twenty?
The ranch… my ranch!
Better not dwell on it. Time to sleep!
She would work hard on farming step by step, aiming to unlock the ranch before the New Year and achieve meat freedom as soon as possible.
…
Early in the morning, Bai Wei received news that Gu Yan’an had returned from Haishi. Unfortunately, she had to work today and couldn’t find anyone to swap shifts with her for the evening.
After enduring her shift until the end, Bai Wei hurried home and dragged Bai Zhi with her to the Gu family’s house.
Gu Yan’an had originally planned to move in with his grandfather today, but his mom had woken up at six in the morning to go grocery shopping. She bought him a large pig’s trotter, saying she would stew it for him—like supplements like.
Since there wasn’t much time at noon, the pig’s trotter had only been briefly stewed and wasn’t tender yet, so it was planned to be stewed again in the evening. To enjoy the pig’s trotter his mom had specially bought for him, Gu Yan’an decided to stay at home for one more night.
Seeing the Bai sisters suddenly appear at his house, Gu Yan’an remained indifferent, not even lifting his eyes.
Bai Zhi had fair and delicate skin, a round face, and round eyes, making her look incredibly cute. Yet, despite her adorable appearance, she was a tomboy at heart.
Her personality was bold and straightforward. Since childhood, she had preferred playing with boys—games like bullfighting, marbles, rolling iron hoops, spinning tops, climbing trees to raid bird nests, and catching insects. She excelled at all of them.
Despite her fearless nature, she was terrified of Gu Yan’an. Just one stern glance from him made her feel as if her throat were being choked, leaving her too afraid to even breathe loudly.
Bai Zhi had no idea Gu Yan’an would be back today. Before coming, her sister had lied to her, saying Gu Yanbei wanted to play with her, so she had happily tagged along.
The moment she saw Gu Yan’an, she froze. What should she do now? Was it too late to run away?
Bai Zhi stammered, “Elder… Elder… Elder Brother Gu!”
Bai Wei put on an affectedly sweet tone and called out, “Elder Brother Gu…”
Gu Yan’an responded with a noncommittal “Hmm,” then turned and knocked on Gu Yanting’s door. “Tingting, the Bai sisters are here to play with you. Come out quickly!”
Gu Yanting put down her pen and walked out. The moment she saw Bai Wei, she wasn’t sure whether she should go over and greet her.
She knew her eldest and second brothers didn’t like Bai Wei at all. Her eldest brother already had someone he liked and had no interest in Sister Weiwei. Yet, Sister Weiwei had liked him for so many years—how could she give up so easily?
Caught in the middle, Gu Yanting felt truly conflicted.
She forced an awkward smile and said, “Hehe… Sister Weiwei, Sister Bai Zhi, you’re here. Please, have a seat!”
Gu Yan’an saw his younger sister going to greet the Bai sisters, so he simply walked straight into her room, sat at her desk, and picked up her textbook to flip through it idly.
Now that he had a partner, it naturally wasn’t appropriate for him to go out and interact with those female comrades, even if they had grown up together in the same compound.
Bai Wei was quite upset. She hadn’t seen Elder Brother Gu for two years, and she never expected that even upon meeting again, he still didn’t pay her any attention.
Why couldn’t he just turn around and look at her?
She wasn’t unattractive—she had the looks, a job, intelligence, and even cunning. Why couldn’t he spare her a glance?
Auntie Pan had even said she was pretty, smart, and capable, very suitable to be the eldest daughter-in-law of the Gu family. She also felt that in this compound, aside from herself, there was no other female comrade more suited for Elder Brother Gu.
But she had been here for quite a while now—why hadn’t Auntie Pan come out to greet her?
Bai Wei forced a smile at Gu Yanting that looked even worse than crying and said softly, “Tingting, when did your elder brother come back?”
“Yesterday. How did you know my elder brother was back, Sister Weiwei?”
Bai Wei’s eyes shifted slightly as she replied softly, “Auntie Wang next door told me.”
Gu Yanting didn’t suspect anything. She turned to Bai Zhi and asked, “Sister Bai Zhi, how come you have time to come over today?”
Bai Zhi wanted to say that her sister had tricked her into coming, but after a moment’s thought, she decided to let it go.
“I came to look for Brother Xiaobei!”
Bai Zhi was only twenty this year and worked as a physical education teacher at a nearby elementary school. Gu Yanting rarely played with her.
“My third brother might have to work overtime today.”
Seeing this, Bai Zhi quickly stood up and said hurriedly, “Then I’ll leave now and come find him another day.”
Her sister really had nothing better to do—why drag her to the Gu family? Thankfully, that big demon Gu had gone into his room, or else she would have been so scared her legs would have gone weak, and she wouldn’t even have had the strength to walk back.
She wondered if her sister was blind—what was so appealing about that icy face? If she ever looked for a partner, she would definitely find someone warm and sunny.
Bai Wei grabbed Bai Zhi’s hand and gently scolded, “Xiao Zhi, we haven’t greeted Auntie Pan yet. Isn’t it too rude of you to leave like this?”
Gu Yanting said apologetically, “My mom is cooking in the kitchen. Should I go call her out now?”
Bai Zhi shook her head lightly. “No need. I’ll go over and greet Auntie Pan myself.”
Bai Zhi gave Bai Wei a disdainful eye-roll. She saw Auntie Pan every day coming and going from work—was it really necessary to come all the way here just to greet her?
Truthfully, Bai Wei didn’t want to leave at all. She even wanted to stay at the Gu family for dinner.
Of course, dinner wasn’t the most important thing. The most important thing was to solidify her relationship with Gu Yan’an over the meal.
Auntie Pan had said before that once Gu Yan’an returned, she would give her a chance and have them sit down together for a meal.
In fact, Pan Huijuan had known for a while that the Bai sisters had come over. For the sake of family harmony, she deliberately stayed out of sight, hoping to invite them to stay for dinner.
But she never expected her silly daughter to lead them straight into the kitchen. Heaven was truly out to get her!
