Chapter 220: Mama's Boy
"Once before, I overheard classmates talking bad about Xiang Qian behind her back, and I got into a big argument with them. My kindness toward her was genuine—it wasn't like she said, just to make myself look better..." Shu Mingyue buried her face in her palms, her shoulders trembling slightly as she cried.
Chu Tang didn't know how to comfort her, so she just gently patted her back.
"Maybe I really did do something wrong." Shu Mingyue sobbed. "Xiang Qian is too sensitive and insecure. I should have considered her self-esteem..."
Chu Tang sighed. "Be more careful when making friends in the future..."
Shu Mingyue cried for a while, and by the time they reached her doorstep, her eyes were still red.
The car stopped.
Shu Mingyue wiped away her tears. "Thank you, Ruan Chutang. I can never repay you for saving my life. If there's ever anything you need my help with, just say the word."
Chu Tang said, "Alright, I won't stand on ceremony."
...
Chu Tang had just left Shu Mingyue's place and returned to the law firm when the front desk girl told her that Jiang Shixu had arrived.
The moment Chu Tang pushed open the office door, Jiang Shixu suddenly stood up and strode over to her in a few steps, his expression worried as he carefully examined Chu Tang from head to toe. "Tangtang, are you okay? I heard you got into a fight with someone last night. Were you hurt?"
Chu Tang stood still and gave Jiang Shixu a strange look. "Who did you hear that from?"
The man's eyes were full of concern as he replied, "A friend at the police station told me."
Chu Tang's eyes held an unreadable emotion. "Then you should know that it was Shu Mingyue who was drugged, and she was the one those people were after. It actually had nothing to do with me—I just helped out and rescued Shu Mingyue."
"I know." Jiang Shixu let out a slight sigh of relief when he saw that Chu Tang was fine. "I heard Shu Mingyue is okay, and all the people involved have been caught."
Chu Tang hummed in acknowledgment. "I'm fine too. With A Wen around, those people were no match for her."
"Good, as long as you're fine."
Just as Jiang Shixu finished speaking, his phone rang.
He answered it. "I'm heading back now."
After hanging up, Jiang Shixu said to Chu Tang, "Tangtang, I bought you some nutritional supplements. Remember to take them. There's still business at the company waiting for me to handle, so I'll head off first."
Chu Tang glanced at the gift boxes on the table.
Colorful, exquisite boxes piled up, filling the entire table.
Chu Tang was a bit speechless. "I'm not even injured. Why did you buy so many supplements?"
"You can take them even if you're not injured." Jiang Shixu raised his hand and gently tousled Chu Tang's hair. "Tangtang, next time something like this happens, don't put yourself in danger again."
Chu Tang pressed her lips together and said nothing.
Jiang Shixu left.
Chu Tang still stood there in a daze for a moment.
The instant his broad, warm palm had softly touched her head, her heart had stopped.
It had been so long since they'd been that intimate.
...
In the afternoon, Chu Tang received a call from Gu Minghua, asking to meet and discuss the divorce case.
Gu Minghua and Meng Yaqin's divorce case would go to court in a few days.
Chu Tang had already made thorough preparations.
Gu Minghua had been discharged from the hospital.
He was now separated from Meng Yaqin and had rented a small apartment on his own.
Chu Tang drove to the apartment building. The moment she got out of the car, she saw a man walking toward her.
It wasn't until he got closer that Chu Tang recognized him as Gu Zechuan.
He was wearing clothes and shoes that cost a hundred or so yuan, and the expensive watch on his wrist was gone too. His hair was messy, no longer slicked back in the old style with hair gel, and his stubble looked like he hadn't shaved in days.
In short, he looked slovenly.
When Gu Zechuan saw Ruan Chutang, his eyes lit up at first, then his expression changed and he frowned.
A Wen stepped in front of Chu Tang, shielding her behind her.
Gu Zechuan's expression was angry. "Chutang, you're representing my parents' divorce case?"
Chu Tang looked straight at him without flinching. "Yes."
Gu Zechuan frowned. "You can't take this case. Transfer it to someone else right now."
Chu Tang sneered. "And why should I?"
Gu Zechuan's eyes blazed with anger as he ground his teeth. "My family is already bankrupt. Now you want to make my parents get divorced too? Do you really have to see my family fall apart to be happy?"
Chu Tang looked coldly at Gu Zechuan. "You've got it wrong. It's not me who wants your parents to divorce—it's your mother who wants the divorce, and your father who doesn't. I'm handling this case to make sure your parents can't get divorced."
Gu Zechuan was momentarily stunned. "What did you say?"
"I've already made myself perfectly clear."
"Are you trying to trick me?" Gu Zechuan looked suspicious. "My mom said you were the one who instigated them to divorce."
A mocking smile curled at the corner of Chu Tang's lips. She crossed her arms and looked at Gu Zechuan with amusement.
"Heh." Chu Tang let out a scornful laugh. "Your mom said, your mom said. Gu Zechuan, how old are you, still having 'my mom said' on your lips all day? Are you a mama's boy?"
Gu Zechuan's face turned ugly. "Let's stick to the topic. Why are you insulting me?"
Chu Tang gave a cold snort and walked straight past Gu Zechuan into the apartment building. "I don't have time to argue with you."
"Chutang, are you really trying to keep them from divorcing?" Gu Zechuan called out loudly from behind.
Chu Tang ignored him and entered the apartment building.
Gu Zechuan followed her. "Chu Tang, whatever you do, don't let them get divorced."
Chu Tang looked at Gu Zechuan like he was an idiot. "Don't worry. Meng Yaqin wants a divorce, but I won't give her that satisfaction."
Gu Zechuan felt something was off when he heard Chu Tang say that.
As they spoke, the elevator doors opened.
Chu Tang and A Wen stepped into the elevator, and Gu Zechuan followed them in.
"I'll go up with you. My dad lives alone now, so I'll go check on him."
Chu Tang made no comment.
They arrived at Gu Minghua's apartment.
"What are you doing here?" Gu Minghua looked at his son with displeasure.
Gu Zechuan said, "Dad, you haven't been home in a long time. I came to see you. Since you don't want a divorce, why don't you come home?"
Gu Minghua replied, "Your mother makes unreasonable scenes every day. I can't be bothered to argue with her. Out of sight, out of mind."
Gu Zechuan said, "Mom has a sharp tongue but a soft heart. You've been married for so many years—don't you know her by now?"
"It's precisely because I know her that I know she truly wants a divorce. She wants to abandon you and me to live an easy life."
"How can you think that way? Mom isn't that kind of person." Gu Zechuan looked indignant. "Mom told me she wants a divorce because you had a mistress on the side before."
Then Gu Zechuan turned to Ruan Chutang. "Chu Tang, since you're my dad's attorney, why did you send the evidence of his affair to my mom? She said it was because you sent her those photos that she wants a divorce. Are you going to tell me you didn't instigate their divorce?"
Hearing this, Gu Minghua's gaze turned sharp as he looked over. "You sent the evidence of my affair to her?"
Ruan Chutang let out a derisive laugh.
"Gu Zechuan, use that pig brain of yours and think carefully. If I don't want them to get divorced, why would I send evidence that's detrimental to my own client to the opposing party?" Ruan Chutang's eyes were mocking. "Those pieces of evidence were obtained by your mother through her own investigation. She said I sent them just to drag my name through the mud, to make you hate me, and at the same time make my client lose trust in me."
Gu Zechuan furrowed his brow. "What you're saying does make some sense."
A sarcastic smile curled at the corner of Chu Tang's lips. "Ha, you believe everything your mother says. Since you listen to her so well, why didn't you just marry Chen Wan and bring her into the family?"
