Chapter 3

Chapter 3 The Road Is Completely Blocked Three meters, two meters, one meter, half a meter—the infected kept drawing closer. Xu Yi raised his Machete and gripped it with both hands before bringing it down toward the back of the infected’s neck. The head was severed and sent flying. It hadn’t even been that difficult? A trace of excitement appeared in Xu Yi’s eyes. He knew this was the effect of the enhancement agent, and it was even better than he had expected. The infected did not fall. Its body had merely stiffened, leaving it standing upright. Xu Yi quickly scanned the area but did not see any other infected. He stepped back and waved at Ling Yue. Ling Yue hurried downstairs, where she saw the body of the infected whose head had been chopped off. Beheading someone was no easy feat. The executioners of ancient times were all extremely strong men, and even they might not have been able to sever a head with a single stroke. Xu Yi did not look like someone with great physical strength. If anything, he appeared rather thin and frail. That left Ling Yue astonished. But there was no time to dwell on it. Xu Yi had already started walking outside. There were three more flights of stairs below, and Ling Yue followed Xu Yi down. “Ling Yue, wait for us.” A voice came from a window on the second floor. Although the speaker had lowered their voice, Xu Yi still heard it, and his brows furrowed. “Quick.” Worried that they would be held back, Xu Yi urged Ling Yue on. “This way.” Ling Yue broke into a run as well. She did not want to be killed by someone else. This was the Apocalypse. She was no savior. Being able to stay alive herself was already good enough. Xu Yi quickly caught up with Ling Yue. After all, he was in better shape than someone who had gone several days without food. “They’re coming down. Hurry.” As he spoke, Xu Yi grabbed Ling Yue’s hand and ran toward the parking lot. There was a red Audi R8 parked there. Xu Yi knew it was Ling Yue’s car. Ling Yue had her keys with her. As they approached, she pressed the unlock button. The car beeped as it unlocked. “Drive away immediately,” Xu Yi said to Ling Yue. “Okay.” Ling Yue knew Xu Yi was worried that she might bring those people along. The two of them quickly got into the car, and Xu Yi glanced back. Those people had already reached the ground floor and were running toward the car. Ling Yue started the car smoothly without any mishap. “There’s a car up ahead with its doors open. They’ll probably follow us.” As she spoke, Ling Yue backed the car out. “Don’t worry about it. Just go. Where are the snacks?” Xu Yi did not want to be deceived. “In the box in the back. It’s full of potato chips. There’s also a case of milk and another case of assorted snacks.” She had originally prepared them to take back to her dormitory. Although Ling Yue was a local, she occasionally stayed in the school dormitory. Xu Yi hurried into the back and prepared to open the boxes to check. “T-the infected have spotted us! They’re running toward us!” Ling Yue had just driven onto the road, and her voice was trembling. “Give me your backpack, then drive straight through. They’re monsters now. Just run them over.” Xu Yi cut open the box and saw that it was filled with potato chips. Then he opened another box. It contained assorted packaged snacks of all kinds. The last box held milk, which Xu Yi opened as well. He took down the backpack, fastened his seat belt, and began stuffing the milk and snacks into it. Who knew whether the Shelter Ling Yue had mentioned had already fallen? Even if it had not, the armed forces under its control were certainly extremely limited. The Apocalypse had descended far too suddenly, without the slightest warning. No country could have mounted an effective counterattack. If any country had been capable of it, they would have begun clearing out the infected long ago. They would not still be silent now. Xu Yi was also worried about the condition of the roads. The car might not even be able to reach the Shelter. Therefore, they had to be prepared to abandon the car and flee for their lives at any moment. “D-do you know how to drive?” Ling Yue stepped on the accelerator, and the car suddenly surged forward. An idea inevitably surfaced in Xu Yi’s mind. If he checked in while inside the car, would he receive driving skills, or something else? “I don’t know how yet. You drive. I’ll feed you.” Xu Yi felt that Ling Yue might not only be frightened but hungry as well. He stuffed the milk and potato chips into Ling Yue’s backpack, then tossed the other box of snacks into the passenger seat. Taking a bottle of milk, Xu Yi returned to the front and fastened his seat belt. He opened a bag of potato chips, grabbed a handful, and fed them to Ling Yue. Ling Yue was quite skilled behind the wheel. She avoided the dozens of infected ahead and drove toward the school gate. Xu Yi took turns handing Ling Yue potato chips and milk. After a while, Xu Yi saw a silver-gray car following them in the rearview mirror. However, it was not driving very steadily. The person behind the wheel probably had little driving experience and was pursuing them despite their fear. After all, they were all university students, and only a small number of them actually had driver’s licenses. “This is bad. The road ahead is completely blocked.” Ling Yue’s expression changed drastically when she saw the situation ahead. “Can we ram our way through?” Xu Yi glanced back. The infected behind them had caught up, and they were only a few hundred meters away. It would not take long for them to arrive. “I’m afraid not. The airbags would probably deploy, and the impact might knock us unconscious. The risk is too high. Unless the car has a very high undercarriage. Movies and reality are two different things—I don’t recommend ramming through. We can take a detour, or abandon the car and climb over.” After hearing Ling Yue’s explanation, Xu Yi immediately made his choice. “There are dormitory buildings over there. The road may have been blocked by survivors inside. We’ll abandon the car and climb over.” Ling Yue’s eyes lit up at Xu Yi’s words. That possibility was highly likely. If it wasn’t survivors, who would have used four or five cars to block the road completely? “Pull over. We might still be able to use the car later.” Xu Yi reminded her before pulling the backpack from the back. Hearing him, Ling Yue accelerated and parked the car along the side. They each took a backpack and got out. Xu Yi also brought along the other box of snacks. This food might become the rations that saved their lives, so they could not casually abandon it. “I’ll go up first.” After putting on his backpack, Xu Yi handed the box to Ling Yue. There was quite a bit of debris piled on top of the cars blocking the road, so climbing over would not be easy. Xu Yi backed up several meters, then sprinted forward and leaped up. His jumping ability had also improved, allowing him to climb onto the roof of the car without difficulty. Ling Yue reacted quickly as well and immediately handed the box to Xu Yi. Xu Yi then pulled Ling Yue up onto the roof. “Quick, they might ram into us.” Ling Yue gave him a reminder before jumping onto the roof of the car on the other side. Xu Yi followed close behind, and the two of them quickly climbed over. Once they reached the ground, they ran forward. After running for a while, Xu Yi and Ling Yue saw a group of infected ahead. “Boom!” A tremendous crash came from behind. Xu Yi looked back. The cars had not been pushed aside. “What do we do? What do we do now?” Ling Yue’s teeth had begun to chatter.
