Chapter 1
Ruan Qing let out another helpless sigh.
Help! After finishing his last mission, he suddenly discovered that the husband he was raising in his game had disappeared!
What was most infuriating was that after going through so much trouble to track down the world where the game was originally published, he was told that such a game didn't exist at all!
Was this an insult to his professional competence?!
【Host, this is actually an insult to my professional competence.】
Ruan Qing smiled thinly. "So, can you find my husband or not? If you can't, then just go ahead and approve my leave. I'm quitting. What's the point of working when my husband is gone? Who am I earning money for?"
System 520 replied: 【That was just a 2D paper husband you raised on your phone—not a real person. Wouldn't it be better to just switch to another game?】
Ruan Qing's smile remained: "I dumped every single penny I've earned since starting this job into him."
520: 【...How about we just report it to the authorities then? We can say you were scammed.】
"Ah..."
Ruan Qing sprawled out across the bed, thinking about his husband's handsome face. That face was custom-sculpted by his own hands, and his personality was set up to be the ultimate, perfect lover.
Whenever he returned from finishing a shift in a mini-world, that little avatar would get pouty and complain about not spending enough time with him.
Then, with just a few sweet words from Ruan Qing, the little guy would be completely swooned, hiding away in embarrassment.
"Damn it! You useless system, are you incompetent or what?! I asked you to find the origin of the game and you can't even manage that!"
520: 【Host, please do not vent your heartbreak on the system. Furthermore, the data tracked by the system cannot be wrong. The origin of the game is indeed within this world.】
【This game appeared on your phone out of nowhere in the first place. Back then, you acted as if you were under a spell, pouring all your money into it. I even suggested you see a neurologist at a hospital, but you yelled at me, saying cybernetic machinery understands nothing about love.】
Ding—The body in the new world has perished. Please assume control as soon as possible, Taskmaster.
Hearing the system prompt, Ruan Qing's already terrible mood plummeted straight to the bottom.
In order to provide his husband with the absolute best things, he had specifically taken on a massive stack of missions back-to-back.
But now! He had no husband! Gone! All gone!
520 quietly watched its host throw a fit. Only when it detected that Ruan Qing's emotions had stabilized slightly did it speak up in an unhurried tone: 【You exited the previous world in violation of regulations, so you didn't receive any points. Having stayed here for a week, your funds have been completely exhausted. Are you sure you don't want to take on the mission?】
Upon hearing this news, Ruan Qing sat straight up with a violent start.
!!!
"Initiate teleportation!"
【Establishing connection channel—】
【Connection channel complete—】
【An unknown entity has been detected on the host's person. Pause for inspection?】
"Holy crap, can you hurry it up?!"
【Host, please do not make a scene. That was an automated voice trigger, not this system.】
520 directly pressed "Ignore" on Ruan Qing's behalf. According to data analysis, humans exhibited a series of abnormal behaviors when heartbroken; generally, under such circumstances, one simply needed to transfer their affection to a new target.
It would find a new target for its host—preferably a different one for every world. That way, its host would actively complete his missions.
The moment Ruan Qing was teleported over, he felt a sharp, agonizing pain course through his body.
He opened his eyes in a blur. Once he clearly processed the scene in front of him, he cursed under his breath, kicked open the damaged car door, and scrambled out.
"Cough, cough..."
Sprawled on the ground, he casually flicked away the blood dripping from his hands. "Getting into a car crash right after arriving—are you sure you aren't doing this to get back at me on purpose?"
520: 【A minor glitch occurred at the teleportation node. Something interfered with the system; the cause is currently being investigated.】
Ruan Qing looked around. This was clearly the outskirts of some town. Getting into a car crash in such a desolate location was practically asking for death.
【Do you need the plot script? The client was disabled in this car accident, after which he discovered his lover was keeping a mistress on the side. Out of low self-esteem, he didn't dare expose them. Only later did he discover that the car accident was a joint setup by his lover and the mistress.】
"That's enough. Don't shove any more information into my head; I'm afraid I'll get an infarction from sheer anger."
The intense pain radiating from his leg caused cold sweat to pour down his face. He performed a rough self-examination with his own hands. "A injury of this degree shouldn't cripple a person, right?"
【The mistress swapped your medication, and the scum bought off the doctor.】
Ruan Qing: "..."
Taking a deep, sharp breath, he tore off a strip of his clothes to stanch the bleeding on his leg. "Call an ambulance for me."
【Already called.】
Although Ruan Qing didn't have many points, his inventory of items was still quite extensive. Picking out a random recovery potion, he downed it, then crawled over to the roadside and went to sleep with peace of mind.
520: "..."
Arriving even faster than the ambulance was a black sedan. 520 watched as the person inside the sedan slowed down and pulled over upon noticing the crash site.
Subsequently, the car door opened, revealing a familiar face.
520 froze for a moment. It still felt a bit incredible—why did the man in front of it look so much like the 2D paper husband raised by its host???
The man looked displeased as he eyed the vehicle blocking the middle of the road. However, out of professional ethics, he still responsibly stepped forward to assess the situation.
The body of the car was a complete wreck, but there was no injured person inside. Damage of this severity indicated a critical accident; he didn't think the driver could possibly still be alive. Just as he thought this, he looked down and spotted lingering bloodstains on the ground.
As if suddenly struck by a premonition, he looked off in a certain direction. Walking closer, he pulled out his phone, preparing to dial 110.
To call someone to retrieve a body.
As he drew nearer, he saw a young man leaning against the base of a tree, his long hair falling over his eyelids.
Even with only half of his face visible, he was breathtakingly stunning. Paired with the messy weeds, scattered branches, and sparse bloodstains, he exuded an even more fragile, tragic beauty.
His chest heaved slightly; he was still breathing.
The man silently exited the emergency call interface and approached carefully.
When his hand touched Ruan Qing's smooth skin, it still felt almost unbelievable.
This person was actually still alive?
Though... only the living were interesting.
He crouched down and lifted the youth into his arms. The weight transferred to his arms made him frown slightly. For an adult male, this weight was completely unreasonable.
Far too light.
In his dazed state, Ruan Qing vaguely felt as though he saw his lover holding him. With great effort, he raised a hand and pinched the man's cheek.
"Such a realistic touch... Is VR really this realistic? This must be a wet dream..."
Muttering under his breath, he suddenly tilted his head up, kissed the man's cheek, and then sank back into a deep slumber.
Having witnessed the entire scene, 520 attempted to retrieve the man's information, but it was to no avail. There was no record of this person in this world whatsoever—it was as if he had materialized out of thin air.
By the time it snapped back to reality, its host had already been carried into the car by that strange man.
520 suddenly noticed a neatly folded white doctor's coat and an ID badge sitting in the back seat of the car.
Chu Yi.
Having obtained a clue, it immediately connected to the network to conduct a search.
The database was far too massive; it had to verify and filter through the entries bit by bit, completely failing to notice just how burning and intense Chu Yi's gaze was as he looked down at Ruan Qing.
